He won the belt and should only have to give it up through retirement or losing a fight, but I also think that winning the belt carries an obligation to defend it within a reasonable amount of time. UFC kind of sent a mixed message by allowing him to fight in other weight divisions without giving up/defending the belt, though, so they aren't blameless.
