As
hockey fans continue to wonder when the lockout may end Panini is finishing up
the final details for the release of Limited Hockey. Set for a December 26th
release date boxes will run $100 and contain 7 cards, which at least 3 will be hits, either autographs or memorabilia.
Box
Break:
3
Autographs or Memorabilia cards
The
set will consist of 150 base cards and 3 subsets; 30 Captains, 20 Retired
Captains and 40 autographed Phenoms Rookies. The base cards will be #/299 and
the Captains & Retired Captains subsets will be #/99. The autographed
Phenoms are #/299 or less plus there will also be a 1/1 parallel.
I am
not a big fan of the base card design; it reminds me more of what I would
expect from Titanium or one of the other Pacific-rebirth hockey products. The
Net Crashers and Manufacturers Mark relic cards are pretty cool, I like that
the companies are looking to go with more original relics like the net strings
and shoe strings from the skates.
Even
though this is only $100 (pretty standard for Panini products), I would put
this more on the upper-end product list because you only get 7 cards out of the
box. While I can justify paying $100 for 3-4 hits out of a standard Panini
product I cannot see paying that price here, the difference being 20-24 packs
versus 1 pack. I just find opening 20 packs more enjoyable than a single pack, there is the hope and anticipation each time you rip one open.
It
does not help that the NHL season seems more like a dream as each day passes.
It should be noted that only games through November have been cancelled so if
an agreement were to be reached games could potentially begin December 1st
and run on a shortened season schedule.
