Would You Buy This Card?

As a vintage collector there is so much damage that I am willing to overlook, creases and paper tears add a story to the card. Then there are cards like this 1895 May Cut Plug N300 card. The 1895 May Cut Plug cards are some of the earliest baseball cards and are highly collectible with even the lowest grades selling for a couple hundred.

This seller has posted a number of these cards over the past year, and the cards are in probably the worst condition that a card can be and still be considered a card. They look like they have had either water or fire damage and the seller has submitted the cards but they each have been returned due to the fragility of the card.

Would you buy this card for $65?

EDIT: I made a mistake and said that they were football cards, the 1895 May Cut Plug cards were college baseball not football. The 1894 May Cut Plug are football cards.

  1. Nah, that's more of a fragment or a scrap than a card.

  2. $65 for a card that is almost 125 years old? I would say "yes, please". Although, it stinks it couldn't even get slabbed.

  3. Not for $65, but I would own it if the price was right. Every card has a story!

  4. I saw these. I passed. I don’t think they would survive the mail

  5. No. I wouldn't get any sort of enjoyment out of owning a card in that kind of condition.

  6. Maybe if it was a card I was chasing but not at that price. Hard for me to say because I've never collected cards that old.

  7. Would I add this card to my collection? Sure... if the price was right. I don't mind cards with a little character. But $65 is a little too rich for my blood.

    1. I would consider in the $8-12 range. I would still be worried about how it would be received, opening an envelope of dust from 1895 that used to be a card would suck.

  8. If SGC was worried that they couldn't get it into a slab without it falling apart, I'd be worried that it would fall apart in whatever storage I put it in.

What would this card go for in decent condition? Because this would have to be a huge discount off that to consider it.

    1. I'm more worried about it falling apart by not being slabbed. Once slabbed the threat of falling apart is squashed.

    2. Looking through completed eBay sales, and A graded cards begin at $160 with PSA 1 cards starting at $200. So it is a huge discount but I would pass at the $65 price.
