Nelson
Mandela passed away today at the age of 95 after months of health issues. Mandela
was a Civil Rights advocate and leader, fighting against inequality in South
Africa’s Apartheid laws. He was eventually arrested and spent 27 years as a political
prisoner before being released in 1990. He later went on to become South Africa’s
President in 1994 and even after he left politics he remained an
activist and the face of South Africans the world over.
I
will always remember him from the picture that was taken the day he was
released from Victor Verster Prison in February 1990, holding his wife’s hand
with his other hand raised in victory. I was a senior in high school and my
Mass Media teacher had the image blown up to poster size and hung it on
the wall.
