In two weeks Upper Deck will be releasing 2011 World of Sports, the multi-sport sticker autograph dump. With names like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tiger Woods, Landon Donovan, Wayne Gretzky, Cam Newton and Hope Solo signing autographs you would expect the best but due to a lack of MLB, NFL or NBA licensing Upper Deck is in a tough position which means that we get a product loaded with college uniforms (except NHL and MLS athletes), coaches and sports that have limited visibility.
Design-wise the set is decent, really what has become expected from Upper Deck designers. It is clean, a pleasant design, nice player shots and overall a nice base card. I liked last year’s design too; it would be wonderful to see if UD ever gets a major license again.
The set will be released February 21st and each 24-pack box will contain 3 autos/memorabilia cards, boxes are pre-selling at $75-80 each. The base card checklist includes 300 cards and inserts include SPx Shadowbox cards, autographs, memorabilia cards and autographed memorabilia cards.
Following the strong autograph and memorabilia checklist includes a decent Shadowbox checklist (Which seems to be soccer heavy) with Tiger Woods, Landon Donovan, David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Mia Hamm and Janet Evans along with some unanounced athletes.
