Sports Cards Super Bowl II

Welcome to Sports Cards Super Bowl II-

Last year I selected a football repack box off the shelf and using the 16 packs included I predicted that the Green Bay Packers would beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV by a score of 24-16, I was off on the score but correct on the outcome. Here is the results from Sports Cards Super Bowl I.

I decided to make this an annual event and again I picked up a football repack box containing 16 random packs and using the same scoring system I will make my prediction for Super Bowl XLVI. Las Vegas currently has New England as a 2 ½ point favorite and the Over/Under of 54 total points.

This year’s box contained cards ranging from 2008-2011 so I expect to see more active players compared to last year’s 1990-2009 range. The packs include Topps, Upper Deck, Panini, Topps, Press Pass and Sage. Because there are 4 college packs I will use any players that were eventually drafted by or currently play for the Giants or Patriots.

Here is the scoring system I will use, which is the same as last year:

Extra Point (1 pt.)- For random cards that could be a sign or superstitious

Safety (2 pts.)- For any rookie from the Giants or Patriots

Field Goal (3 pts.)- For each non-rookie player from either the Giants or Patriots

Touch Down (7 pts.)- For any Hall of Fame players (or if they are a HOF lock)

TD w/ 2pt Conversion (8 pts.)- For any autos or relics (NFC hits go to Giants, AFC hits go to Patriots).

Final Score:

New York Giants- 5
New England Patriots- 8

OK, this turned out to be a pretty disappointing turnout for Giants and Patriots, had the Steelers or Eagles been in the Super Bowl this would have been a blowout. To make it worse I pulled a freakin Mardy Gilyard. This guy still haunts all my box breaks. Since this is really an unrealistic final score I turn to my last NFL blaster box, a 2011 Topps NFL repack box to settle the score and determine for once and all the ultimate winner.

Base Cards:
Patriots- 15 pts.

Final Final Score

New York Giants- 10
New England Patriots- 31

So the system is not a science but I guess you can say an art, and after requiring a fall back option the Patriots are going to bring their “A Game” and this time there will not be a miracle helmet catch for the Giants but only defeat.

Hopefully Sports Card Super Bowl III next year will give me a nice selection of cards so I don’t need to find a fall back option.
