Won't Somebody Please Think of the Rookies?

I have a question regarding MLB rookies.
Let’s say the worst-case scenario happens and baseball cancels the entire season. How would this affect RC cards? For example, I will use Kyle Lewis from the Mariners. He was a late season call up and had 71 at-bats in 2019 so he was under the MLB rookie eligibility maximum. He was projected to be on the Mariners’ opening day roster, so his 2020 Topps cards have the RC logo. But if the 2020 season isn’t played Lewis will remain under the MLB eligibility with only 71 at-bats.

So, my question is will Kyle Lewis have RC cards in 2020 and 2021?
Ignore the 2020 RC arrow. It should be pointing to the card on the left. <===

    1. As far as I can tell, only his 2016 cards have the RC logo. Are there cards of his from another season with them?

  3. Nope. The RC logo really doesn't have anything to do with rookie eligibility. Yordan Álvarez has the RC logo this year even though he is obviously not eligible for Rookie of the Year this year since he won it last year. I'm sure there are examples of players getting rookie cards one year on an early-season cup of coffee and not having it the following year even though they were still considered rookies.

A better question is what does Topps fill the Update set with if there has been little or no baseball at the time they have to print it. And if there's no season, there will likely be no rookies at all in next year's series 1 and other early-season issues.

    1. I was wondering about the late season sets, Topps is going to have to be really original because they still have to release sets. Really all of the companies are in a tough position.

    2. Yeah, it's not just the rookies...there likely won't be an All-Star Game, and there won't be many trades or other player movements either. Update and Heritage High Numbers may be filled with a lot of backup catchers and setup relievers who normally don't get cards. Maybe they'll come up with some creative subset ideas.

Then again, are we sure the facilities that print them will even be operating?

    3. For the updare set, maybe Topps can make cards for all the rostered players they typically ignore in their lust to include players from yesteryear and non- sports nonsense.

  4. Great. Hadn't even thought about this. Topps and their rookie card logos already give me a headache. This is just one more level of crap to add onto it.

  5. Certainly will be issues if there is no 2020 season. Topps doesnt like do-overs with RC logos, but its possible they do next year to get some RC cards into the set. Very possible they dont even have a Updates set this year if there is nothing to update. (as with trades, rookies, and ASG/HRD cards)

  7. Maybe this will force Topps to put cards out of everyone on the 40 man roster. I’ve heard rumors that old all star games will take up cards in the set, so it could just be the same old Topps behind Topps and ignoring 70 % of the roster except for the Yankees, Red Sox and maybe the Dodgers.
