Today we honor all of the men and women who have given their lives in the service of our country. Since 1775 over 1.34 million U.S. soldiers have died during war and another 1.5 million were wounded. They have given all to ensure that the rest of us have our freedom, for this we thank you and your families.

Thank You Veterans

Today is Veterans Day, a day where we celebrate all U.S. military veterans. This day originally began as Armistice Day when President Wilson proclaimed that November 11, 1919 would be a holiday to honor those who served with pride and to remember those who died in service of our country during World War I. The date coincides with the day that the Germans signed the armistice, November 11, 1918 (11/11/18 at 11 am), to end all hostilities between the Allies and Germany. The day was observed as a day of remembrance but it was not until 1938 when the date was designated as a legal holiday. Following WWII and Korea it was decided to re-name it as Veterans Day to honor all American veterans who have served our country in the military.

I rarely talk about my personal life outside of sports but I am extremely proud of my family and friend’s military vets so today’s post is dedicated to my father (USMC), my oldest brother (US Army) and my middle brother (US Navy). Today is a very important day and it gives everyone a chance to thank all those who have served our nation proudly.

2009 iCardz America At War: Band of Brothers Series 1

67 years ago on June 6, 1944 over 150,000 Allied soldiers landed at Normandy in what became the largest invasion force ever. Canada’s iCardz, producers of historically educational cards, created the America at War Band of Brothers Series 1 release to educate people about this gallant action. Not to be confused with the 1942 R12 America at War series, the iCardz release is a modern day (released in 2009) set released to commemorate the 65^th Anniversary of D-Day.

 The set has a base checklist of 192 cards plus a 7 card autograph set and sketch cards plus there are also instant win cards where you have a chance to win actual equipment used during the war. Each box contains 24 packs with 8 cards per pack and sells from $50 with 1 in 6 boxes containing an autograph or sketch card.

The autograph checklist includes Lynn "Buck" Compton, William "Wild Bill" Guarnere, Edward Heffron, Clancy Lyall, Donald Malarkey, Amos "Buck" Taylor and Earl McClung. Artist Ingrid Hardy, who has had her work appear in sets like Topps Star Wars releases (30^th Anniversary, The Clone Wars, Galaxy, Empires Strikes Back, etc.) as well as the Heroes and Lord of the Rings releases, provides the artwork for the sketch cards. Even though the set has now been out for 2 years I have only found 1 sketch card, a Harold Duty sketch card, up for auction at a whopping $149.99 and I am unable to find any of the autograph cards related to the set.

 Currently iCardz is working on a second series, America at War The Pacific Series 2 which covers the Pacific theater of operations from World War II. Like Series 1, the second series will also contain 192 base cards, autographs and sketch cards and will probably be available for a similar price.

2011 Press Pass Stealth Offers A Military Salute

Press Pass has an American military themed product coming out this week, just in time for Memorial Day. 2011 Press Pass Stealth is being advertised as “Press Pass Stealth 2011: For Those Who Serve and Collect” and should hit shelves June 1^st.

Each box will contain 1 autograph and 1 race-used memorabilia card and the boxes are running @ $90-95 each. This is actually quite a small set. The base set is a 100-card checklist but consist of only 48 total drivers, 30 NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers and 18 Nationwide Series drivers. But the main focus of the set is the theme with autographs for each military branch, memorabilia cards based on medals and a number of military themed inserts.

 Obviously being a NASCAR product it will appeal to only a certain type of collector but I think that Press Pass has done a wonderful thing here showing love for our troops. The only downside is that similar priced Press Pass NASCAR products contain 1 autograph and 3 memorabilia cards where Press Pass NASCAR releases with 1 auto and 1 memorabilia usually run in the $70-75 range so this release seems a bit high for what you pull.

Our Veterans

Today’s post is not about sports, but instead it is about Veterans Day. Today is the day that we recognize our veterans, both past and present. Almost everyone has a connection to a veteran, be it you, a parent, sibling, aunts or uncles, cousins or other. My family is no different both past and current. My brother is currently in the Army and has done 3 tours in Iraq; his wife did 2 tours in Iraq before retiring earlier this year.

No matter what your political beliefs are we need to always support our soldiers. The soldiers that have been to Iraq or Afghanistan need to know that we appreciate what they have done for us. Please take a moment to tell them.

Veterans Day is directly connected to WW1; the Armistice that ended the war was signed on November 11th, 1918 at 11am (11/11 at 11am). There is only 1 living American veteran from that war, Frank Buckles, he is our last thread to that era.

Support the troops, let them know we care and have not forgotten what they have done for us. To support the troops currently serving overseas you can send a care package directly or anonymously. Talk to soldier’s commanding officer, spouses or families to send a package directly or you can make donations through non-profit organizations like Red Cross or USO.
