Another Round Of Halloween Christmas Cards

A new addition to my Nightmare Before Christmas collection, a Chris Saranndon autograph. Saranndon, or Sarandon depending on who is writing about him, was the voice of Jack Skellington so this was a big find. In another cult favorite, The Princess Bride, he played the villainous Prince Humperdinck.

The 2001 NECA The Nightmare Before Christmas release included a couple of autographs. I have the Glenn Shadix autograph card. Shadix voiced the Mayor of Halloween Town and is probably best known for playing Ortho in Beetlejuice.

I believe there are two more autographs in the set but they are Tim Burton and Danny Elfman so I have no expectations of every being able to afford either card so I am satisfied with my Nightmare collection as it is.

The Art Gallery: 2015 Nightmare Before Christmas ACEO

This month’s Art Gallery comes from an artist that is selling his own artwork over the internet. It is a pretty standard ACEO type of sketch card with a blank back, except for the description and artist’s signature.

 

I picked up this card up right before last Christmas and as you know I am a big fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas and since there are no official TNBC sketch cards I went with this bad boy, a pen and colored pencil piece. I just looked it up to see if I could find the artist’s name, besides D. Quinn, and I realized I paid a lot more than I should have paid. Probably double what I would pay for an ACEO sketch card today. I must have been feeling quite festive.

 

The scene is right after Lock, Shock and Barrel kidnapped Santa for Jack and bring him back in their trick-or-treat bag. Santa pops out of the bag and Jack comes over to explain that Santa can take a vacation because he will be taking his place. There are two small errors that the artist made; at this point in the scene Jack does not have his own Santa hat, he takes Santa's hat off of his head, and he doesn't wink his eye but otherwise the card is pretty spot on.

Some Halloween Christmas Cards?

One of my favorite holiday films is actually a double genre film fitting in both Halloween and Christmas, a wonderful and loveable animated Tim Burton film that came out in October 1993, Nightmare Before Christmas.

 

But as beloved as the film is, it remains a cult film and therefore has just a small footprint in the cardboard world. In 1993 Skybox released a small set in conjunction with the movie release. It is a basic set but it did include a cool insert called Spectra, which is kind of a foil with a texture type coating.

 

In 2001 NECA released both a base set and a TCG set. The base set had inserts like cel cards and autographs, which includes signatures from Tim Burton, Danny Elfman, and America’s favorite mother Catherine O’Hara. A couple of years later Disney released a couple of different Disney Treasure sets which also included cel cards.

 

My most recent Nightmare Before Christmas pick up is this Glenn Shadix autograph, he voiced the mayor of Halloween Town. Shadix got his big start in another Tim Burton film when he played Otho in Beetljuice opposite of Catherine O’Hara. Towards the end of his life he did a lot of voice work for animated shows, movies and video games. I have been on a hunt for Chris Saranndon autograph from the set, he did the voice for Jack Skellington, but they are not very common and the only one that I have seen recently is one that has the end of the autograph smudged and I will not pay what the seller is asking for a card I consider damaged.

 

Another card in my Nightmare Before Christmas collection is one of the film cel cards from 2004 Disney Treasures.

 

Here is a better view of the cels, which are sequential. I know it is difficult to get a perfect view of a cel so I pulled up the scene in the movie where this takes place. It is when Sally is in the tower and singing “Sally’s Song”, while singing she picks up the black cat which then turns to jump out of her arms.
