After waiting three
years I finally picked up a 2013 Spider-Man The Original Animated Series Lenticular Motion Trading Cards set. When the set came out in 2013 Rittenhouse was selling the
9-card lenticular set and one of two different Paul Soles (the voice of Spider-man in the
show) autographs for $99 and that just seemed unreasonable plus I figured that
people would cherry pick the set for the autograph and flood the eBay machine
with the base set for $15-20, which is when I would have grabbed one, yeah I was wrong.
Three
years later and I have never seen a base set show up without the autograph so I
finally picked up one of my Grey Whales. I selected the set with the Spider-man
autograph card, the other autograph card is of Peter Parker. There is actually
a dealer who sells the sets for $39, usually about once a month, otherwise
expect to spend around $90 for a set. I would eventually like to add the Peter
Parker version autograph.
The cards do not scan very well because the lenticular texture but here is a video of the first card in the set. They are quite beautiful in hand. The backs of the card are basic white with a card number #L1-L9 and copyright information.
In January Rittenhouse released the Spider-Man Original Animated Series Lenticular Motion Trading Cards set, at the time Rittenhouse
was selling the 11 card set (9 lenticular cards plus 2 autographs) for a
whopping $100, which is way more than what I was willing to spend. I had
assumed that people would be selling the 9 lenticular base card set for $10-20
within a week of the release, boy was I wrong. People are selling the complete 11
card set; it appears that nobody is breaking up the set to sell the Paul Soles
autographs separately. I find myself in a predicament; I can either wait until
someone sells the base cards alone or dig in and pay $95-100 for the set,
something I would rather not do.
I have found myself looking for cool Spider-man alternatives
that are more reasonable in price, I have been keeping an eye on some Spidey cards and a handful of sketch cards but I came across something that may
actually be a nice addition to my Spider-man collection, comic book cover
posters.
The poster that caught my attention and brought me to the
site was The Amazing Spider-Man #70, which was part of a Kingpin story line and
includes the first appearance of Kingpin’s wife Vanessa Fisk. Issue #70 in a
nice condition can run $20 or more so a movie poster sized vintage comic book
cover rendition for a similar price is pretty fair. I don’t normally post about
companies but when it comes to cool items I figure I can bend the rules a tad.
What is even better is that there are quite a few comic book covers including Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, X-Men, Thor, Iron Man and the list goes on, there are even some odd ball covers like Weird Tales, Yellowjacket Comics and Charlie Chan. I spent at least an hour going through the pages, I think I may have found a new type of collectible to add to my super hero collection. I already have a Machete movie poster above my computer, I think a couple of Spidey and Green Lantern comic book posters would be perfect bookends around it.

Archives will be releasing Spider-Man The Original Animated Series Lenticular
Motion Trading Cards set (wow, that is a mouth full) on Wednesday. The set
consists of 9 lenticular cards based on the original 1967 Spider-Man animated
cartoon and two autograph cards from Paul Soles, the actor who voiced Peter
Parker/Spider-Man, limited to #/250 for each card.
Each set runs
$100 and you get all 9 lenticular cards plus one of the two autographs, if you
buy two sets from Rittenhouse you will be guaranteed to get both autographs.
I grew up
watching this cartoon during the 1970s (in reruns) so I would love to pick up a
set, Rittenhouse has done very well with entertainment cards and I am sure this
will be a nice set too, but no way would I drop this kind of money here.
Here is the
problem, besides the two autograph cards Rittenhouse has not released any information or
preview images of what the 9-card checklist looks like. It is extremely difficult
to justify purchasing a $100 set without seeing any of the cards let alone a
set that consist of only 9 cards and an autograph. Sadly I expect to see sets,
minus the autographs, showing up for $10-15 on eBay within days of the release
and that is when I will probably purchase a set.
