A Killer Pacific Largent Set

In 1989 Pacific released a 110-card Steve Largent set that covered his entire life through 1989, including his childhood. The set is made up of 85 base cards and then a 25-card subset that is a 5x5 (25 cards) puzzle card.

I had no intention of picking up the set one by one because I have no LCS, there are no shows near me and the only way would be grabbing them off eBay or COMC and I didn’t feel like paying .50 cents to $1.00 per card. That was until I found a seller who was selling the set with an opening bid of .99 cents plus $5.15 shipping. The kicker is that the COA on the side of the case is signed by Largent and I have seen enough Steve Largent autographs to know that I am 100% confident this is real. 

I tossed up a bid of $4.85 and waited for the countdown. Nobody else bid and I won it for the $6.14 shipped and I am so excited. I got the cards yesterday, so I had to build the puzzle card first thing. This puzzle card is the largest card I now own and if I had a man cave I would frame it for the wall. This 110-card Pacific set nearly doubled my Steve Largent collection from 120 unique cards to 230 unique cards.

Some Steve Largent Pickups

I have received a number of packages recently from other bloggers and readers and I am very thankful that the cardsphere community is so friendly, it makes working out trades and deals so easy.

Mike, a reader and fellow Steve Largent collector, contacted me about some Largent cards that he had available if I was interested. When he emailed me originally I was in between trips and wasn’t always able to respond so I am very appreciative that he is patient with me and we were able to work out a deal. In all 20 cards were sent my way and with his help I made some nice headway in my Steve Largent collection.

A Cardsphere Meet And Trade

Following my annual Sports Cards Super Bowl/All That Is Left this past February I got an email from Angus of Dawg Day Cards regarding a Danny Shelton autograph that I pulled that he was interested in trading for. We were looking to make a PWE trade but he let me know he would be in the Valley visiting family this week so we just decided to meet up at a local card shop to make the trade.

Angus is a great guy and he put together a superb trade package for me made up of all my favorites. He hit the all-important Ken Griffey Jr needs, with some awesome Canadian versions too, some University of Arizona products and to top it all off a 1979 Police Seattle Seahawks team set. We met before the shop opened and just talked for awhile and when the shop opened we spent a couple more hours just going through dime and quarter boxes before I had to head home for the kids but I really had a ton of fun. Meeting other collectors from the cardsphere is always a great experience.

The 1979 Police Seattle Seahawks Team Set. The cards are slightly larger than a standard base card and there are 16 cards on the checklist. On the back of each card is a football term along with some words of wisdom.

Another Day Not In Paradise... Plus Football Cards

The last week has been very trying for me. I am going through some serious life changes right now and have been dealing with writer’s block, which is pretty obvious with my short posts the last couple of days.

Things are going to get worse for me before they get better and I will be doing some traveling in November and December so I don’t know how much I will post but I will try to keep it as close to 20-23 posts per month even if they are just short 1 card posts or commentary.

 

Tonight is a two card NFL post.

First up is a 2009 SP Authentic Steve Largent. I picked this one up in a recent COMC purchase for less than a buck. I am always happy to add anything Largent for that price.

 

The second card is a “Caught up in the bidding” card. It is from the 2015 Spectra Football release, this is the pink Prizm refractor #9/10. The Cards are my second favorite football team and Larry Fitzgerald is a hell of a guy, he does so much for the community and you just have to root for him. I ended up getting this card for around $8 shipped, which isn’t bad for something like this but I saw a similar Fitz card #/5 go for a price around what I paid.

To The Grave

Last week Zippy Zappy from Torren Up Cards posed a question to himself about which cards he would consider taking to the grave. What is funny is that earlier that day my son asked me if there were any of my cards that I would never sell so mentally I started going through my collection to consider which cards have more of a meaning to me and which ones I could do without if I chose to sell them.

I plan on being cremated but in this instance I will pose the same question:

Which cards would I bring to the grave?

I have quite a few vintage cards dating back to the late 1800s and they would make a nice collection in the afterlife.

Fast forward to pre-war confectionary cards like my 1933 National Chicle Sky Birds Richthofen. The beautiful illustrations could keep me company while the worms crawl in.

I could skip the whole cardboard collection and go with my 8x10 autographed Gale Sayers photo, we already share a birthday maybe we can share some laughs while the worms crawl out?

The photo is creased after being in my collection nearly 30 years (and numerous moves), but still a wonderful addition to my football collection.

Maybe something from my Griffey collection? Kerr, Largent or Jay Buhner? No… the worms will just play pinochle on my snout.

 

In the end I believe I would take just one card with me. The 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92, often considered his rookie card, was my first white whale and the first (and only) white whale that I actually own. Lou Gehrig was one of the good guys, he was a pure player and a great teammate. He actually signed with the Yankees out of college so he could give his signing bonus to his parents because they were in a serious financial bind and he wanted to pay for their home. Now that is a good boy.
