A Couture COMC Pick Up

On Black Friday COMC had free shipping as long as you had 20 or more cards on the order so I went on a bit of a spree of sub-$2 cards and ended up hitting 24 cards, enough for free shipping. I requested my cardboard treasure trove and recently got them. Most of my cards were Griffey with a small collection for my Ryan Bader pc but there were two Randy Couture cards that have been on my Grey Whale checklist that I can finally mark of.

First up is 2010 Upper Deck World Of Sports Clear Competitors #/550

The set was a multi-sport set using the licenses that Upper Deck had at the time and the set was kind of all over the board but that was the intent with a set named World of Sports. Plenty of autographs and some cool inserts, which is where this Couture Clear Competitors was included. I love a cool acetate card and this one is pretty well designed.

The second card also comes from Upper Deck but this time is the 2012 SP Authentic Golf release, this specific card coming from the Parade of Stars insert which shows various athletes playing golf. There are three versions, the base is green with the gold, blue and red being more rare. Some also have an autographed version.

 

Is A David Beckham Error Card Worth The Cost?

Last week Beckett reported the sale of a David Beckham autograph error card from the Upper Deck World of Sports series. Apparently Luciano Emilio’s autograph sticker made it on to a David Beckham base card. This card eventually sold for $325 on eBay. Another Beckham card with Luciano’s autograph showed up yesterday with a BIN of $399.99.

Upper Deck reported that the problem occurred due to a difference on the checklist, somewhere between creating the checklist for the base set and the autograph set somebody did not note the difference and the Beckham base cards got the Luciano stickers. Upper Deck has now announced that it was a production error (i.e. - the person applying the sticker either paid no attention or did not care) and they are willing to replace the cards for anyone pulling the error card.

This is just a mistake and Upper Deck is making it right by offering a replacement (not sure if they mean a Beckham card with a Beckham autograph or a Luciano Emilio card with an Emilio autograph on it) but this is the problem with sticker autographs.

I have to ask though, why would anyone pay this much for a card like this? In 5 years will anyone even want this card? How long will it be before people start peeling the autograph stickers of other athletes in the set and switching around cards selling them as error cards?

Random Blaster Box- 2010 Upper Deck World of Sports

A few weeks ago I did a review of the 2010 Upper Deck World of Sports release. The product contains athletes from across the board ranging in sports from basketball, baseball, soccer, swimming, ice dancing, lacrosse and a few others. I do find it odd that there are no football players though even though Upper Deck has a license for the NCAA. It is an interesting collection and because it is so varied almost every type of collector will find something of interest.

Most of the athletes in the team sports are in their college or high school uniforms with the only exceptions being the National Hockey League, Major League Soccer and Major League Lacrosse, which Upper Deck has licenses. One thing that you will notice is that the coach cards show a team logo in the lower left corner, I wish that the other base cards do too. I know some solo athletes (like figure skating, golf, swimming, etc.) do not have a team logo maybe put their college team logo or something like the Olympics or X-Game logos or even just a country flag. I know it is just a little thing but it is kind of cool.

This is a product that I decided to pick up because the base set. This is classic Upper Deck with a clean action shot, simple design and the focus is all on the athlete. As much as I like the base set I hate the inserts.

A few of the disappointing/glaring problems:

The autographs are all stickers.

The All-Sport Apparel relic card was designed with a sticker auto in mind and the cards without an autograph look unfinished.

The Athletes of the World autograph cards do not even show a shot of the athlete.

This is just a selection of some of the known athletes that I pulled. Of course I had to include the only Univ. of Arizona athlete, Eric Berger. Some others of note include Russell Westbrook, Danny Ferry, Amanda Beard and Bode Miller.

2010 Upper Deck World of Sports

Yesterday Upper Deck released the 2010 Upper Deck World of Sports set. A 400 card checklist consisting of athletes from all walks of the sports world including baseball, basketball, golf, ice hockey, BMX and even coaches and today they added more value to the release when they announced that collectors can send in box tops from opened boxes of World of Sports for a chance to win a #/5 dual autograph card of Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.
