The Art Gallery: 2010 Rocket Ink Hollywood Is Dead Danny Trejo

This month’s Art Gallery display comes from Rocket Ink Studio’s 2010 Hollywood Is Dead release. Matt Busch, the founder of Planetmatt Entertainment (which in turn created Rocket Ink Studio), is a modern illustrator that has expanded in to pop culture. For the past 20 years he has been associated with Star Wars, producing official art for everything from Star Wars games and books to cards for Topps. His company now produces their own card sets with the Hollywood is Dead sets being the most popular releases to the point he actually just got funding using a Kickstarter campaign to produce a Hollywood Is Dead coffee table book.

This Danny Trejo zombie sketch card was done by Jason Durden who has also created sketch cards for Topps in their Mars Attacks and Star Wars sets, Upper Deck’s Marvel releases plus Breygent and Viceroy.

Trejo is one of my favorite actors, his origination is so different from the average Hollywood actor. As a young adult he was in and out of prison before deciding to clean himself up, which he credits with saving his life. When he got out of prison in the late 60s he became a youth drug counselor which led to him spending time on movie sets working with actors who had drug problems.

He has now been clean for over 40 years and has appeared in nearly 300 productions ranging from television to movies, videos, animated shows and video games. My favorite has to be Machete, Trejo is just playing a natural role it was perfect for him. I have a full size Machete poster and miniature Machete Kills autographed poster in my man cave.
