Is It A Jets QB Thing?

Does Mark Sanchez’s recent indiscretions with a 17 year old girl, yeah yeah… I understand that 17 is legal in NY/NJ but that does not make it right, change your opinion of him or how you collect?

Your Momma Is A What?

In recent years the NFL has addressed a number of indiscretions by players, from Adam “Pacman” Jones’ many criminal activities to the most recent actions by Steeler’s QB Ben Roethlisberger, the NFL has tried to be swift with justice and either fine or suspend the players involved. Now is the time for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to show that he will not only react to players who make poor choices but also react to the teams and their management and hold them accountable for stupid moves.

It has now been reported that during a pre-Draft interview, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland asked Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute. You have to be shitting me? How the fuck can someone seriously look another man in the eye and ask if his mom is a hooker? I understand that Bryant’s mother has done prison time for multiple charges and I realize you need to understand the upbringing of a player before drafting them, but I think there is a line where the questions begin to border on stupidity.

To add to the whole situation, Yahoo! Sports had to publicly break the story before Ireland even apologized, a week after the NFL Draft. Now Dolphins owner Stephan Ross said he will “look in to the situation”. Goodell made an example of players and has laid down the law with the most recent suspension of Roethlisberger, now it is time to show he holds teams to the same standard as the players.

Does anyone expect a fining or suspension of a team executive? I am not holding my breath on this one; I hope I am wrong though.

Agent Zero, The World Is Not Enough

Gilbert Arenas, one of the top rated Point Guards in the NBA, continues to disappoint. Not on the court, but out in the real world. Allegedly Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton were playing a card game on a return flight from Phoenix on Dec 19th and Arenas refused to pay his gambling debt, then a few days later Arenas reportedly brought three handguns to practice, which caused Crittenton to respond with his own threats.

I hate to disparage an Arizona Wildcat but Arenas has continued to make bad choices off the court time and time again. Either he is running his mouth or making horrible choices.

Agent Zero could have easily been ranked as one of the best Point Guards of this generation. He ranks near the top in Points Per Game, Rebounds Per Game and Assists Per Game. He could easily be grouped with Steve Nash, Chris Paul and Deron Williams but he is almost an after thought because of his off-court antics. You can find Arenas relics and autographs for under $1, which does not seem to do him justice. He turns 28 in a few days and still has a number of years ahead of him so it is possible to see him finally come to the front where he belongs, he just needs to grow up and shut his mouth, let his play define him and not his constant bickering.

Why Brett?

Brett Favre is back… again! It seems that Favre is going to continue this path to completely destroy his legacy and reputation when he signed a $12 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings this morning. His contract is pending a physical but that is just a formality.

I am sorry but Favre forced the Packers to deal with his yearly retirement talk and when he got called on it he had a fit and forced a trade. Then he started strong for the Jets but ultimately caused their collapse when he insisted on playing injured and once again played the retirement game. Now he had the Vikings on edge until July 28th when he said he was staying retired. But once again he changed his mind after the Vikings had already moved on with their plans at QB.

Don’t get me wrong, I put Favre up there as one of the elite QBs with Marino, Montana, Elway and Young but he is ruining his placement in that echelon with his behavior. Gone are the days of his 3 MVPs and 2 Super Bowls, in their place sits the shell of a man who seems to feel compelled to continue playing even though he is a mere shadow of his former self.

I like Favre, I always saw him as the down-home good guy who played hard but still had a good heart. His appearance in “Something About Mary” seemed to solidify him in that persona. I just wish he would have taken his own cue and retired as a Packer, that just seemed to define who he was but these past few years show a different side of the guy we all loved, a more concerning person who looks to only care about himself. It is like he is trying to prove that he can still play and he will force that on to any team that is willing to sign him. Come January will the retirement talks begin again, maybe next season he will be signing with the Rams, 49ers or even the Texans?
