All That Is Left V

Now that I am done yelling at my television and I have come to the point of acceptance that the Seahawks lost on a dumbass pass play call it is time to look at “All That Is Left” where I review what is best of the rest of the Championship packs.

A 2012 Prestige Nick Foles RC, I always enjoy pulling a University of Arizona product
A 2012 Score Greg Jennings, this card isn’t a MOJO pull or anything like that but I felt this is a cool photo of Jennings doing the Lambeau Leap
A 2013 Prizm Jarvis Jones Rookie Autograph redemption, only 2 ½ months before the redemption expired too. I looked and it doesn’t appear that any of these cards have been filled, I submitted it anyway and will wait and see.
A couple of Eddie Lacy rookie cards out of 2013 Topps
A 2013 Strata Marquise Goodwin rookie card bronze parallel #/150
I close with a 2014 Sage HIT Ka’Deem Carey Next Level card, another Arizona Wildcat to bookend the post

Get Paid Like Strawberry Without The Nose Candy Issues

Have you ever wanted to live the life of a professional baseball player?

Who wouldn’t want to get paid to play a sport they love? Well now you can get paid and you don’t even need to be able to play, though it will require you to have at least $550,000 available.

Yesterday the IRS announced that they will be auctioning the remaining annuity from the deferred portion of Darryl Strawberry’s 1990 salary. His 1990 salary with the Mets contained a $1.8 million team option but it was broken up and $700,000 was deferred, being put in to an annuity with a 5.1% APR. Over the years the investment went to his ex-wife in a divorce settlement but she lost it to the IRS when she filed bankruptcy because the couple still owed $542,572 in back taxes from Darryl's playing days. Since then payments owed by Strawberry to the IRS have been missed and the big wigs decided to close the case and collect their back payments through selling off the annuity.

The auction begins January 20, 2015 with an opening bid of $550,000 (the amount owed plus auction fees). The current value of the deferred contract is $1.28 million and will be paid by Sterling Mets LP, the NY Mets parent company, following the closing of the auction on May 1, 2015. The payments will be made over the next 18 years as 223 monthly installments of $5,739.91 each.

Better To Remain Silent And Be Thought A Fool Than Speak And Remove All Doubt

Following the Bengals 24-3 blowout loss to the Browns, the Bengals rookie running back Jeremy Hill responded to a question asking if the Browns are better than originally thought with “They’re probably worse than I thought to be honest with you” followed with “Those guys, they’re not that good

This is coming from a guy who has a whole 8 games experience in the NFL, 86 rushes for 404 yards and 154 yards came against the Jaguars. So discounting his 154 yards versus the very week Jags defense he has a total of 250 yards rushing over 7 games for a 36 yard/game average. This guy does not have the experience to make statements like this. The Bengals did not play well and Dalton had his worst game ever but no matter what the Browns beat the Bengals in Cincinnati by three touchdowns. That cannot be discounted, especially by a rookie.

Football player’s talk smack, which is part of the game. Sometimes it can be backed up, like Richard Sherman and Patrick Peterson, and sometimes it can’t., like Geno Smith, but I think anyone who rips a team as being awful after losing by a blowout to that same team is a freaking moron. The re-match will be December 14th in Cleveland so Hill has plenty of time to prove he isn’t just a bag of hot air.

All That Is Left IV

Now that the Seahawks have won the big game 'Hawks fans like me are now coming back to Earth so it is time to find out what else was in those Championship repacked packs. In all I opened 38 packs (counting the Panini sticker pack and the OT packs) and I had some decent pulls. For the first time I actually pulled some relics and an autograph.

Let us find out “All that is left”.

A couple of rookies with a 2012 Prestige Richardson and a 2012 Upper Deck Mohamed Sanu 1993 SP variation. I always liked the early 1990s SP design, they were among my favorites of the decade.

A 2012 Topps Chrome Justin Blackmon 1965 Tall Boy variation
A Magician’s top hat worth of Topps Magic football:
A double dose of 2012 Magic rookies; Nick Foles and a RG3 mini

A double dose of 2013 Magic inserts/parallels; Sam Bradford short print black bordered mini and a Manti Te’o Rookie Enchantment (I really like these cards).

One of the repacks came with an advertised relic card along with some inserts and additional draft cards in penny sleeves floating in the box. The relic card I got was a 2006 Upper Deck Vernon Davis Rookie Futures jersey card.
A 2012 Absolute Kendall Wright Star Gazing jersey relic
A 2012 Strata Jeff Fuller Rookie autograph
I also pulled a variety of rookies and inserts, nothing special though. This year was my most satisfying break because I was fortunate enough to see my favorite team win the Super Bowl, I got my first hits out of a repack box and now the sports cards at 2-2 at predicting the Super Bowl.

Random Pack Busting- NBA Style

I don’t think I have opened any basketball packs recently so over the past couple of weeks I grabbed two blaster boxes, Panini Absolute and Panini Threads, along with a couple of packs of Panini Prizm.

I will start with the Prizm packs. I actually like the product, it reminds me of Finest. The fronts are chromed, the backs are semi-glossed and there is even the “Finest bend” to the cards. One things stands out, the edges of the cards appear to have a dimpled texture but the cards are actually smooth. When you look close the cards actually look like silver chrome basketballs with the seams of the ball in the background and the textured edges. I got a kick out of that one.

Panini got some players in their new uniforms (sort of), like Joe Johnson with the Nets. A nice selection of rookies, current stars and retired stars makes up the checklist. The rookies do not have a “RC” logo or any other rookie notation. I pulled Kim English, a non-entity for the Pistons, and Meyers Leonard, an even bigger non-entity for the Trail Blazers which is made worse by the idea that he was the #11 pick last year.

Panini Threads is up next, I like the Threads set because it is just a simple base set. The cards show action shots and keep things tight on the players. Because this is an early season set players who changed teams are not shown in their new uniforms, such is the case of OJ Mayo. I start with two solid stars in Rose and Love (if he can stay healthy) and an up and comer in Mayo. I have liked this guy since the start but he was starting to diminish in Memphis, a change of scenery and now he has progressed across the board, a resurgence of sorts.

A Wade red retail parallel, not huge but a good player though his personal life has suffered some setbacks as of late. Close out with an Al Jefferson Inside Presence insert.

The final blaster, Absolute, is similar in idea to other base Panini sets. The focus is on the player over a foil background. The downside to foil is that the card faces get smudged and scratched easily. I started out with some good pulls, like Mayo I have been big on Curry too and this year he is tearing it up. After he was drafted in 2009 I had written a post going over some possible NBA trades and he was my main point in a possible Stoudamire to Golden State trade. I think Curry playing behind Nash would have been the perfect Master-Padawan relationship.

It is nice to see players in their new uniforms, even though all Howard seems to have done in LA is irritate a new team with his same old shit. How many more teams is he going to go through before he matures? Harden has really proved his worth in Houston.

A couple of Suns including local boy, and University of Arizona product, Channing Frye (who is out for the season with an enlarged heart). There is not a whole lot positive coming out of this season for the Suns except for a Lottery Pick and possibly a second First Round pick from the Lakers in the Nash trade. I close with a couple of All-Stars, Larry Bird and Yao Ming (not pictured).

All three were fun to open, I love having a variety when I open packs it just makes the ripping that much more fun. All three are decent products but I do not expect to really buy additional Threads or Absolute but I do dig the Prizm cards so I may grab some additional packs as I come across them.

A Random Rack Pack 2012 Topps Magic Football

I decided to pick up some football cards just for the heck of it to have a variety in between my baseball and basketball pack ripping. A jumbo rack pack 2012 Topps Magic Football and a blaster of Topps Strata Football.

I will start with the Magic Football rack pack, which came with three packs with each pack containing 5 base cards and a mini card. The rack pack also includes 3 retail-exclusive blue parallel mini cards.

The design is the standard animation-style Magic card, a nice action card along with team logo, conference, player name and position. I do like the simplistic design, I think Topps is keeping a simple design to highlight the player and it really works. The backs are similar to previous years with player bio and each player has a “Magical Memoranda” which includes some player trivia.

I did not pull anything magical (pun), only one Seahawk and no Cardinals. I lead off with the undrafted Jermaine Kearse; his 7 receptions for 31 yards may not even keep him on the roster next year. LaMichael James was about the BIGGEST name I pulled, and while he only got in to 4 regular season games (in an over-crowded 49ers backfield) he ended up playing in 7 games, counting the final 4 games of the season and 3 playoff games, with 809 yards of total offense and a touchdown. Sadly his 2012 performance may be best surmised with the fumble in the Super Bowl. We will definitely see more of him next season.
I was lucky enough to pull the card of future Hall of Famer Titus Young. In 2012 this head case had three team incidents  resulting with 3 suspensions and instead of shutting his mouth he decided to turn to Twitter to air his grievances and demand his release. Detroit granted him the release, St Louis took a chance and signed him but within 7 days the Rams cut him and now he has cleared waivers and no team has shown any interest since he was released. Way to talk your way out of a pay check there Mr. Young.

The mini cards are just like the base cards… just cuter. The blue parallels are a retail exclusive parallel.

A couple of inserts;
I pulled two Supernatural Stars, Manning and Mike Wallace

Finally closing with a Charismatic Combo

I do not expect to pick up any more packs of Magic, they are ok but I just don't feel the urge to collect the set. I will try to get through organizing the Strata packs and scan them tonight so I can do a write up tomorrow.

All That Is Left III

Now that I am 1-2 with Sports Cards Super Bowl, though my wife is a Ravens fan so a happy wife takes precedent over my Sports Cards Super Bowl prediction so I am fine with being wrong, it is time to look at all that is left from the packs I busted with the annual "All That Is Left".

I did not pull anything jaw dropping this year but when you consider I spent $20 for 20 packs I cannot complain. Here is all that is left.

Starting with a duo of 2011 Topps cards, the Colin Kaepernick rookie from yesterday’s prediction stands out as one of the best cards in the box. A win would have made the card better but still a decent pull. The 2012 NFL MVP/Offensive Player of the Year was a nice addition. I expected Peyton Manning to win the MVP Award by a slight margin over Peterson but honestly the award could have gone either way because they both earned it.

A couple of HIT cards, RG3 and Doug Martin. SAGE does not really make a huge splash in the sports card market but you cannot complain when you pull these two from a couple of HIT packs. RG3 added the ROY Award Saturday night and didn’t seem to have a limp when he walked on stage to accept the award, this could be good news for Redskins fans.

I opened the 2012 Topps Football rack pack after making the prediction yesterday and here are the best of the rest. A Gold Mario Williams parallel #/2012 and a Jim Kelly QB Immortals retail exclusive insert. I finished up with a Brandon Marshall 1965 mini.

I have to close with this beauty

Sports Cards Super Bowl III

It is time to go to the football repack box once again to make my annual Super Bowl prediction. This year I grabbed a “Championship Collection” repack box that comes with 16 factory sealed packs + 4 bonus packs… yeah, just saying “20 packs” would have been much more difficult I guess. I grabbed a jumbo rack pack of 2012 Topps to use for OT if needed, last year I was in a lurch when I only pulled 5 cards relevant to the teams and had to use a blaster box that I had opened previously to finally settle the score.

This year’s box contains packs from 2007 through 2012 so hopefully there will be a nice range of active players. The packs this year are from Donruss, Leaf, Panini, Sage, Topps and Upper Deck. There are college packs again so I will use any players drafted by or currently playing for the 49ers or Ravens.

This is the third year that I am doing Sports Cards Super Bowl and so far I am 1-1
Here are the previous results:

Here is the scoring system I will use, which is the same as previous years:

Extra Point (1 pt.)- For random cards that could be a sign or superstitious

Safety (2 pts.)- For any rookie from the 49ers or Ravens

Field Goal (3 pts.)- For each non-rookie player from either the 49ers or Ravens

Touch Down (7 pts.)- For any Hall of Fame players (or if they are a HOF lock)

TD w/ 2pt Conversion (8 pts.)- For any autos or relics (NFC hits go to 49ers, AFC hits go to Ravens).

The packs:
2007 Leaf Rookies & Stars
49ers- 0 pts.
Ravens- 0 pts.

2007 Topps Football 3 Packs

49ers- 10 pts.
#180 Antonio Bryant
#416 Frank Gore (I am figuring he will be in the HOF eventually)

Ravens- 10 pts.
# 5 Kyle Boller
#54 Willis McGahee
#196 Todd Heap (+1 point for graduating from the same high school where I graduated)

2008 Upper Deck First Edition Football

 49ers-3  pts.
#125 Patrick Willis  I was torn on this one, he may end up in the HOF but I wouldn’t say a lock

Ravens- 0 pts.

2008 Score

49ers- 6 pts.
#275 Isaac Bruce
#277 Nate Clements

Ravens- 0 pts.

2009 Philadelphia
49ers- 0 pts.
Ravens- 0 pts.

2011 Panini Score 5 Packs
49ers- 0 pts.

Ravens- 2 pts.
#347 Jimmy Smith

2011 Topps Football 2 Packs
 49ers- 2 pts.
#413 Colin Kaepernick

Ravens- 0 pts.

2012 Leaf Young Stars
49ers- 0 pts.
Ravens- 0 pts.

2012 Leaf Draft Pick   2 Packs
49ers- 0 pts.

 Ravens- 2 pts.
#9 Courtney Upshaw

2012 Hit Football Low Series 2 Packs
49ers- 0 pts.
Ravens- 0 pts.

2012 Hit Football High Series
49ers- 0 pts.
Ravens- 0 pts.

Final Score:

Baltimore Ravens- 14
San Francisco 49ers- 21

The game will go back and forth early but when it comes down to it the 49ers defense will come through and keep Joe Flacco and the Raven’s offense out of the end zone.
