Goodbye White Whale

Last night I sold my white whale, my 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92. As a collector this was a big blow, I had wanted that card since I returned to collecting in 1992 and finally picked one up in late 2006 or early 2007 after saving up. But what I got for it will really help with my medical bills and someday I hope to find another copy, even if it is a lower grade I will be happy to just have it in my collection alongside my Griffey cards. This is the final picture I took before packing it up for shipping, my wallet card was there to see it off.

  1. Sorry to see it go. Good luck when you decide you can find a new one.

  2. At least you can say you once possessed a card from Gehrig's playing days. Which, all things considered, is a pretty cool claim for any baseball fan to say.
I'll never be able to find room in my budget for such a great piece of vintage.

  3. That's a heck of a card. It's too bad you had to let it go, but in the end there are (probably) more important things than our hobbies.

  4. Yeah, that's a huge bummer. But at least you're fortunate enough to be able to sell off some "toys" for financial relief, which is more than a lot of the world's population can say.

  5. Its better to have loved (had one) and lost than to have never loved (had one) at all. Or something like that. Best wishes moving forward.

  7. Wow...what a card! Its a shame you had to sell it, but what good is a baseball card if you dont have your health? I agree with John, at least you had it in your collection for a while, and you have the pics to prove it.

  8. Man... I can only imagine how difficult it was for you to let this go. Glad you were able to get enough money to help out and hopefully one day you'll be reunited with a 33 Goudey Gehrig.

  9. I'm so sorry you had to get rid of that card. It is so sad that we live in a country that people have to do things like that just to pay for medical bills. Do you have a GoFundMe account that we can donate to? You have to stay well brother, and you have to get that card back in your collection!!!

    1. I haven't set up a GoFundMe account, I would feel guilty having other people pay for my medical bills.

  10. Would you be against someone setting one up for you?

    1. I appreciate the offer but I would feel awkward having people giving me money to take card of my health related expenses. I will catch up with my medical bills, it will just take a bit of time.
